Inclusion at Poppleton Road
At Poppleton Road Primary we pride ourselves on providing an inclusive education for all pupils and aim to provide for the different needs of individuals in collaboration with families. For many children, the need to make provision for Special Educational Needs are identified by the class teacher, who will involve families in discussions and will liaise with the SENCO. Depending on the particular needs of the child, there may be occasional involvement from outside agencies with specialised skills. The school follows the procedures of the City of York Council and the DfE SEN Code of Practice, and undertakes to keep parents and carers fully informed and involved.
Whilst the person in school who knows your child the very best will usually be the class teacher, we recognise that some children require additional and different support which will help them to thrive and make the most of their personal skills and interests to support this we have an Inclusion Team who are dedicated to supporting your child and family.

What help do Poppleton Road offer for parents?
Being a parent can be hard and we want to provide a welcoming supportive environment to all of our families. We would love you to join us for our regular Sip and Support events held by the Inclusion Team. These gatherings are held monthly – during the school day to allow for parents to meet staff and other parents in a supportive and informal setting. Join us for a biscuit and a hot drink! In our recent Sip and Support sessions we have had visits from members of the Senior Leadership Team, our Educational Psychologist and Young Carers. We are always looking to shape these sessions towards what will be most helpful for families so if you have any suggestions for us, please do contact Ms Howard at school to share them.

We are lucky to live in an inclusive city where support can be assessed through a wide range of services working together. How can I get independent advice?
Who are SENDIASS?
SENDIASS is an independent advisory service who may be able to help you understand and navigate at times where you need advice from someone outside of school.
There may be times where you would like to seek advice outside of that which school can provide. We are happy to signpost you.
York Family Learning team offer a range of courses which are provided to support families with a wide range of topics.
We are working to develop relationships with the Family Matters to allow for parents to access courses in the local area. At present you can access support through courses in one of the locations around the city.

There may be times where you are concerned about how independently your child is able to access the toilet, appropriate for their age, or where you have concerns about their bowel and bladder needs. The Healthy Child Service or your GP may be a source of advice. We have also found the following information to be beneficial for some of our children and young people. Hand Exercises
Sometimes children need a little help to develop strength in their hands. This can have a huge impact on muscle development. This NHS website has guidance and suggestions on activities you can try at home.
The Specialist Teaching Team for Autism can be accessed through the Universal Offer as part of the Local Authority’s support. We may be able to request specific outreach for a child if they are needing significant levels of help and this will be done through the Learning Support Hub. Our SEN Champion, Miss Spencer will be able to help with ensuring we have your voice in any referral.
The Autism Teaching Team also offer a range of additional services which can be accessed by parents. Fliers will be sent home via the office for each termly offer.
