British Values at Poppleton Road Primary School
At Poppleton Road Primary School we are committed to prepare children for life in modern Britain. Our curriculum and school ethos ensure that British Values are taught explicitly, discussed openly, and experienced daily.
Our school values of success, enjoyment, community and safety run through everything we do and they sit naturally alongside the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.
How We Teach and Promote British Values
We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that develops pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical understanding, whilst preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. British Values are embedded through:
- PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education), RSE (Relationships and Sex Education), and SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Development).
- A safe, open and positive learning environment where rules, class norms and school values help children feel secure and valued.
- Assemblies, collective worship and class discussions, where values are explored in depth and linked to children’s real-life experiences.
- Picture News. This is delivered weekly through age appropriate session ( EYFS- Y3 and Y4- Y6) Picture News is an educational resource for schools that delivers weekly news packs for children focusing on current affairs and global issues through impactful images and thought-provoking questions. The resource aims to engage pupils, develop their speaking skills and promote critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the world and their place in it.
- A wide range of experiences beyond the local community, such as sporting events, residential visits, outdoor centres and visitors from a variety of faiths and groups. These opportunities broaden children’s horizons and encourage respect for difference.
British Values in Action at Poppleton Road
- Democracy – Pupils learn about fairness, voting and responsibility through school council, class decision-making and collaborative projects. This nurtures teamwork, shared responsibility and a sense of success for all.
- The Rule of Law – Clear rules and expectations help children understand justice, responsibility and the importance of laws. This underpins our culture of safety, where children feel secure to thrive.
- Individual Liberty – Children are encouraged to make independent choices within a safe environment. They are supported to express themselves, build confidence and discover the enjoyment of learning without fear of failure.
- Mutual Respect and Tolerance – Respect for all is central to our community. Through curriculum learning, assemblies and lived experiences, pupils develop empathy and celebrate diversity, helping to create a strong and inclusive community.
